Banned driver was caught doing 160kph on bike

-

A 21- year- old driver who was banned from driving was stopped by a Garda who clocked him travelling at 160kph, Tubbercurry District Court was told. Stephen Duffy of Moycashel, Kilbeggan was stopped Ballyglass East on January 4th by Garda Raymond Guilfoyle.

The court was told he had been banned from driving for one year for not having insurance while he also received a two year ban for a drink driving offence which was imposed on November 27th 2015.

Mr Eamon Gallagher, solicitor ( defending) pleaded that the insurance offence had been a technical one with the defendant failing to transfer over his insurance. Duffy accepted he was driving while banned and he had been going through a bad patch at the time.

He hadn’t been working since August 2015 and a relationship also broke up around this time.

Mr Gallagher pleaded that the defendant was a decent young man.

The defendant told the court it was on the main road . He had no proper explanation for his driving.

“It was pure stupidity,” he said. He was starting a job soon. The bike was impounded and subsequently crushed and he didn’t have any vehicle now.

Judge Kevin Kilrane said it was a shocking speed on a country road. “It’s not Mondello or somewhere like that. If a tractor pulled out you would have been catapulted 300 yards away.”

Duffy was fined € 300 for no insurance, € 200 for no licence and € 200 for speeding. He was also banned for five years.
