1916 picture contest
ANNOUNCING a unique competition to commemorate the executed leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, the County Sligo 1916 Centenary Committee are asking people to submit photographs of special portraits erected throughout the County.
Committee Chair Chris MacManus said: ‘ To mark the centenary anniversary of the 1916 Rising, our committee has been erecting portraits throughout the County of each of the executed leaders – sixteen in total.
“This week, we are erecting the last of the portraits, that of Roger Casement who was hung in Pentonville Prison in London on the 3rd August, 1916.
‘ We hope that the portraits will create and maintain interest in some of those lesser known leaders who were executed for their involvement in the Rising.
“These include men such as Con Colbert and Edward Daly and will act as a reminder to our communities of the sacrifice of many in defending the ideals of the Proclamation.
‘ To promote this initiative we are asking people to take smartphone photos of the portraits wherever they see them in the towns and villages around County Sligo and upload them to the Sligo 1916 Committee Facebook page.
‘ We will be giving away 1916 themed prizes such as clothing and limited edition Countess Markievicz badges to those who submit the first picture of each portrait.”
