Businesses set to continue Green Awareness

-

FOLLOWING the success of the Green Fleadh Aware Campaign, which was run over the last two summers, a similar initiative is taking place. Sligo County Council and Sligo Tidy Towns in partnership with the Sligo Food Trail and The Sligo Festival have launched the Green Aware Campaign. The launch took place at City Hall, with the campaign aimed at continuing the awareness among the hospitality sector of dealing with waste, in particular food waste, in a sustainable way.

Hotels, Restaurants, cafes and pubs are being asked to commit to the campaing. It looks at reducing food waste, reusing what they can, recycling and composting and thinking before they buy.

Businesses that support the campaign will display a window sticker committing to being Green Aware.

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr Hubert Keaney, said: “We are delighted to launch this campaign in conjunction with The Sligo Festival which is a collaborative festival for Sligo, bring- ing the arts, businesses and communities of Sligo together.

“With the active partnerships built up in Sligo for the Fleadh over the last two years, Sligo won the Best Green Festival in Ireland 2016, and we want to continue the good work and goodwill that is out there in the Sligo community.

“It is therefore very appropriate to be launching this Green Aware Campaign in the early days of The Sligo Festival.”

The Mayor of Sligo Municipal District, Cllr Marie Casserly also welcomed the initiative.

She said: ‘ The focus for the Green Aware Campaign this year is on Reducing Food Waste.

“By reducing food waste you are not only being environmentally sustainable, you are saving your business money! Well done to all involved in this project, and we see again in Sligo a great example of the collaboration that is taking place between the local authority, Tidy Towns volunteers and the local business community.”
