The Sligo Champion

Delighted to celebrate our 10th anniversary

BRID Torrades was well known as a Sligo chef and restaurateur before she opened Ósta Café & Wine Bar in 2016. From 1990 to 2003 she ran, with her husband Marc, the award winning Glebe House, Restaurant and Accommodation in Collooney, following which she operated the Atrium Café in the Model Niland until it closed for renovations in 2007.

Ósta Café & Wine Bar followed the culinary tradition which Brid started when she moved to Sligo ( originally from Dublin and via Germany and France) with an emphasis on quality and local ingredients. Since Ósta Café opened ten years ago eggs have been supplied by Ballisadare Eggs and Bluebell Farm and fresh veg, herbs and fruit, in season from Crimlin Farm and Eden Plants and meat from local butchers Clarkes. Now, with more suppliers and choice of products available in Sligo and the Northwest, even more of Ósta’s cost of purchases goes straight back into the local economy.

Ósta To Go which opened in recent years beside Ósta Café & Wine Bar has been serving a growing demand for quality handmade sandwiches and ready to go lunch as well as its now famous coffees to go. Delicious home baking is another highlight of Ósta Café’s offering – with something to suit everybody’s taste be it melt in the mouth brownies or their famous gluten free muffins. And of course their scones which are made fresh early every morning are snapped up not long after they come out of the oven!

Ósta Café opens at 8am Monday to Saturday and at 9am on Sundays which provides a fantastic opportunity to people coming off night shift to meet early risers for breakfast or an excellent cup of coffee and home baking. It is also an ideal place to go after work in the evening as they continue serving until at least 7pm ( 5pm on Sundays). This is a place where all of Sligo life can be found – a buzzy, happy place where everybody seems to be part of the family! Indeed it is also an ideal place to have a private party and they have hosted many of these – from small weddings to Christmas office parties – excellent food, good choice of wines and intimate surroundings contribute to making a great event.

One thing that has been always noticeable in Ósta Café is its friendly, well trained team, many of whom have been there for a long time and now led by Ted Wesolowski. Ted also finds time to train baristas and often provides this service for other new and established coffee venues.

The longest serving member of the team has been there from the beginning - Gunta Celmina who will be retiring early next year.
