Period house in West Sligo

LANDMARK 18TH CENTURY ‘ EASKY HOUSE’ FOR SALE

- JENNY MCCUDDEN

PROPERTY hunters looking for a room with a view or the perfect ‘ surf shack’ could grab themselves a slice of Sligo’s waterfront if they are willing to invest € 1.5 million on ‘ Easky House’

Nestled above one of Europe’s’ premier surf breaks, Easky House is a stunning period country residence dating from the 1830’ s. But it was not always looking like it does today. In fact the current owner, who bought it from the original family saved the house from demolition.

Ward Stevens ( 52) explains: “I bought the house more than 10 years ago now, and I have spent the last decade restoring it. The house was condemned. It was falling apart.”

An Australian surfer, Ward first spotted the property when he was in Sligo catching waves. He fell in love with the location and could see its potential and decided to buy it. “It might have been a labour of love, but more like the labour of a maniac,” he joked. “When I first walked in here, you could see the stars through the roof from the foyer. When you opened the front door, there was rain coming down through the roof. All of the fireplaces had been stolen,” he recalls.

He spent 10 years lovingly, meticulously and sensitively restoring the house and gardens to extremely high standards.

“I planted 3,500 trees, 2,000 hedges, the maritime views are sensational, but we are set back and protected from the elements.”

The regency style property boasts sea views as far as Donegal- and with elegant shuttered sash windows, high ceilings and lots of natural light, it is the perfect place to take in those majestic Sligo scenes - where the mountains meet the sea.

Set just outside Easky village on 9 acres, the grounds are laid out as a park style garden with beautiful lawns interspersed with mature trees.

The House is being sold by private treaty. Ward expects that it would be of interest to international investors. He says: “The property maintains all of its original character and charm although it now benefits from all of the conveniences associated with contemporary living. This is a warm house now and extends to over 5,000 sq ft with 4 reception rooms, bar, kitchen and utility rooms downstairs and 6 bedrooms, 5 with en- suite, upstairs. All of the work has been done by us and it is ready to walk into.”

The Wild Atlantic tourist trail passes by the front driveway. Easky village is less than 1 km away. This sale presents a rare opportunity as Easky House has only changed ownership three times in almost two hundred years - so opportunities to own the property don’t come around very often!

As Ward says: “I’m in no rush to sell. Some say the asking price might be ambitious, but anyone with an appreciation of period properties will know how it has been restored.

“I kno came in h romantic really un

But W says the great eff house a to do thi carpente specialis - so I had doing.” W fact that year in S and upke not arou here I co house. T go, but I’
