TUBBERCURRY 3- 21 DRUMCLIFFE/ RP 1- 9

TUBBERCURRY opened their 2016 Belfry Senior Football Championship campaign with an emphatic 18- point win over an outof- sorts Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point side in Saturday evening’s Group 1 fixture at Connolly Park in Collooney. The 2014 County Champions controlled almost every sector of the game with David Kelly prominent in the half- forward line, Stephen Gilmartin dominant at midfield, and in forward Jason Perry, Tubber had arguably the game’s most impressive performer over the course of the hour. Apart from scoring one of Tubber’s three second- half goals he was a constant thorn in the Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point defence. Tubbercurry led by 0- 11 to 0- 5 at the interval as Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point struggled to get to grips with the game. Despite the tireless work of team captain Neil Ewing, who would eventually contribute 0- 5 of DRP’S total, the north Sligo club struggled in many areas during the opening half. There were brief signs of a revival after the restart when a John Bellew converted penalty helped reduce the deficit to three points in the 38th minute.

But almost immediately, Tubbecurry took over, scoring 3- 7 in the remaining 22 minutes while Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point would only added another two points.

The goals came from David Kelly, Fabio Cretaro and Jason Perry and put real daylight between the sides on a night when very little went right for their opponents.

Tubbecurry’s victory sets them up well for a key Group 1 show- down with the holders St Mary’s this weekend, while Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point face a potential make- or- break clash with Coolera/ Strandhill this Sunday afternoon at Markievicz Park.
