Rovers Heritage Group runs popular exhibition
SLIGO Rovers Heritage Group hosted an exhibition at the Hawk’s Well Theatre as part of an historical reflection titled ‘ The Way We Were’.
The evening involved a display of the club’s memorabilia and a lecture delivered by the Group’s Chairman Aidan Mannion.
Aidan was pleased with the response to the Rovers exhibition.
He said: “The interest in Sligo Rovers extends well beyond the local soccer community.
“We had people at our stand last night who probably never stood in the Showgrounds but they were familiar with the great characters who were associated with the club over the years,
“Whether as players, volunteers or supporters. I think our tradition as a community club resonates with the people of Sligo, and they admire our resilience and spirit which sustained us through many very challenging times since the club was founded.”
The Hawk’s Well display is the latest in a series of displays hosted since the Group was established in 2012.
The first exhibition was hosted in Sligo Museum in 2012, featuring a special section on the legendary Dixie Dean. There were subsequent displays in the Northside Community Centre and Riverstown Folk Park, and the Group will host other exhibitions around the county in the future.
The immediate priority for the Group is to complete the Official Sligo Rovers History which is due for publication later this year. It will be a comprehensive, detailed reference book with records from every season, fascinating stories about the memorable games and famous players, and reflections of the people who served in various capacities.
A limited edition hard- back copy of the book will include a special ‘ Supporters’ Page’ and subscribers can have their own name or that of a nominated family member or friend entered on a dedicated ‘ Supporters’ Page’ at a cost of € 75.
The deadline for subscriptions for the limited edition is Friday 12th August.
