ST FARNAN’S

The minor team have booked a place in the A league final following defeat of Eastern Harps in the semi final on Thursday last. The final score was St. Farnan’s 1- 12, Eastern Harps 1- 6 This game was played in wet conditions on a dull evening in Keash. The first half saw both sides defend very well Patrick O’Connor opened the scoring with a point from a free. Eastern Harps levelled with a point from play. The sides added a point each. The latter half of the first half saw St. Farnan’s full forward Stephen Mulligan come very much into the game scoring three points. At half time we led 0- 5 to 0- 2.

Harps got the first point after the break from a free. Stephen Mulligan added a point but it was Eastern Harps who led after scoring a second free followed by a goal. The lead was short lived as St. Farnan’s got two points from frees by Patrick O’Connor and then the all important goal from Stephen Mulligan. Our defence, aided by Conor Gordon worked well to prevent Harps from scoring. They scored their last two points from frees. Although the margin at the final whistle was six points this game was a tough battle for St. Farnan’s and they had to work very hard for the win. The team will face the winners of Owenmore Gaels and Shamrock Gaels replay in the final on August 11th.

The team was S. Hallinan, F. Kilgannon, F. Ryan, D. Hallinan, S. O’Brien, J. Weir, M. Devaney, E. Kilgannon, K. Mc Gee, C. Hallinan, S. Mulligan ( 1- 7), D. Hanley, G. Connolly, P. O’Connor ( 0- 5( 4f), C. Gordon. Subs : O. Connolly, R. Molloy, E. Kilrehill.

The intermediate team got off to a winning start in the championship with a win over Enniscrone on Saturday in Easkey. The final score was St. Farnan’s 1- 12, Enniscrone 2- 3. This was a hard fought victory. Despite having a good deal of possession it wasn’t until the twenty minute mark that we got our first score, a point from James Hynes. At that stage Enniscrone had scored 1- 2. St. Farnan’s finished the half better with points from Finnian Cawley, Shane Neary and Patrick O’Connor. At half time a point separated the sides. Enniscrone 1- 2, St. Farnan’s 0- 4.

St. Farnan’s made two substitutions early in the second half, Gareth Ryan and Niall Crean. Both proved very effective and despite Enniscrone getting a second goal St. Farnan’s dominated play. Defence worked well to prevent Enniscrone from getting a third goal. At the final whistle there were six points separating the sides. Ciaran O’Connor got our only goal. Tomas Ryan and Conor Gordon played very well. The team was : P. Harte, D. Hynes, P. Culkin, G. Feeney, D. Taylor, T. Kilgannon, J. Quinn, E. Kilgannon ( 0- 1f), J. Hynes( 0- 2), S. Neary( 0- 1), F. Cawley ( 0- 1), T. Ryan, P. O’Connor ( 0- 2), C. O’Connor ( 1- 4( 3f), C. Gordon. Subs: G. Ryan for G. Feeney, N. Crean for S. Neary, C. Gillen for D. Taylor. The team will play St. Molaise Gaels in the second round of the championship on Sunday in Connolly Park, Collooney at 12.30

The under 14 team had a fine win in their first championship match when they overcame Enniscrone by 6- 7 to 2- 7 on Friday last. The under 12 team had no luck against a strong Buninadden side losing 18scores to 8 on Tuesday last. They will play Easkey in the group play off in Markievicz Park on Saturday at 2pm.

In hurling the under 16 team got off to a winning start in the championship with a comfortable win over Ben Bulben Gaels by 7- 15 to 2- 3 on Monday last. On Monday week they will play Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool in Easkey at 7 pm. On Friday the under 14 team begins it’s championship campaign away to Ben Bulben Gaels also at 7 pm.

BUNNINADDEN

WELL done to the Senior team who had their first game of the Championship in Connolly Park last Saturday evening against Shamrock Gaels the game ended in a draw with a score of 2: 09 to 2: 09. The lads play the second round in Markievicz Park next Saturday evening against St. Johns at 5: 45. U14 Bunninadden/ Ballymote boys play the quarter final in the championship against Calry/ St. Josephs on Monday the 8th August in Hazelwoods main pitch at 7: 00pm. Well done to the U12 team who had a great win last Tuesday evening against St. Farnan’s, they are now in the final which will be played in Markievicz Park on 16th August at 6: 30pm. Good luck to the teams that are playing in the coming week. Training continues as normal for all underage teams.. DRUMCLIFFE/ ROSSES POINT IT was a disappointing start to the Belfry SFC for our senior men’s footballers last Saturday evening as they were decisively beaten by Tubbercurry in their opening championship group game on a final scoreline of 3- 21 to 1- 9. Despite the usual heroics from team captain Neil Ewing, Tubber ran out deserving winners. The result means this Sunday’s clash with Coolera/ Strandhill at Markievicz Park ( 2pm) becomes critical in terms of our championship ambitions for 2016. Our junior men’s footballers will take part in a special exhibition match in Scarden this Friday Evening, August 5th, at 7pm, when they play Oman GAA Club who are visiting Ireland to compete at the GAA World Games in Dublin later this month. The Omani delegation will be given a Civic Reception by Sligo County Council on Friday afternoon before making their way to Scarden for the match with our junior team at 7pm. Club support for this special occasion would be appreciated. The ladies intermediate footballers were well beaten by St Mary’s last Sunday morning in their latest championship game. Our young team tried hard but could not match the power and physicality of their more experienced opponents. Next up: the girls play Owenmore Gaels at Oxfield this Sunday morning at 10am. Hard luck to girls minor footballers who lost their opening Minor ‘ A’ championship group match to Eastern Harps by five points last Thursday evening. The concession of four first- half goals did the damage in this game. However, the girls deserve a lot of credit for the quality of their second- half display. They simply left themselves with too much to do. The minor championship has a round- robin format this year so there is still plenty to play for. The boys U14 footballers bowed out of the ‘ A’ Championship quarter- final, going down to Curry by 8- 4 to 2- 10. This was a closer contest that than the final scoreline suggests. Both sides registered 12 scores over the hour but Curry were the more clinical side up front as their goals tally suggests. Like the league, the U14s now enter the Championship Shield competition. Our U12 Division 3 team won their league semi- final last week after a convincing 0- 13 to 0- 5 win over St Mary’s in Kent Park. Despite the unseasonal weather and missing a number of players ( who are away on overseas holiday duty), the team played some scintillating football and showed a great team spirit. Thanks again to all the mums and dads and supporters who braved the elements to support the boys. The Benbulben Gaels U14 hurlers host Easkey/ St Farnan’s in the championship at Oxfield this Friday evening at 7pm All club team managers are invited to a meeting in Oxfield this Thursday evening ( Aug 4th) at 9pm to help finalise arrangements for the Club’s big BBQ event on Saturday 27th. The day’s activities will include a range of exhibition games and fun events for all age groups and we are keen for management representatives to have an input. INTERMEDIATE championship result: Owenmore Gaels 1- 14 Ballymote 4- 5. A draw in Buninnadden in our opening round of championship. Left to rue a catalogue of wides and concession of cheap goals against a vastly improved Ballymote. We battled well from 6 down at half time to put ourselves 3 up in last minute only to concede a goal in last minute. We move on with Geevagh next Saturday. Team: Gavin Phelan, Gareth Lavin, Jason Farrell, Kealan Bolton, Peter Wynne ( Stanley Harte), Kyle Taheny, Pa Murphy, Niall Hodgins ( 0- 2), Aaron Nicholson ( Brian Mahon), Conor Davey ( 0- 1), Michael Casey ( 0- 2), Glen McCormack ( 1- 2), Ryan Philips ( 0- 2) ( Ronan Sweeney ( 01)), Paul Hannon ( 0- 1), Alan Flynn ( 0- 3). The u12’ s boys ran out 10 point winners in their Division two group 2 semi- final against Coolaney Mullinabreena in Connolly Park on Tuesday evening last July 26th. They advance to the final with the date tbd. Congratulations to the u- 14 girls who captured our first trophy of the year after claiming the ‘ C League on Saturday evening with an impressive win over CT Gaels. Well done all players and managers Anthony and Leah! Hard luck to our u- 14 boys who lost out on Friday evening to Eastern Harps in the first round of the championship. They drop down to the B1 shield which will be played at the end of August. Minor league div 1 semi- final result A. E. T: Owenmore Gaels 3- 15 Shamrock Gaels 1- 21. An incredible game at Connolly Park ended all square on Thursday evening as extra time couldn’t separate these closely matched teams. Level at half time we fell 6 points behind midway through the second half, but battled back to draw level at the death. The teams were neck and neck throughout the extra period. Team: Shane Kerr, Roland Anderson, James Duffy, Roan Connelly, Bryan McPartland, Jack Foley, Calum Tonry, Josh Verdon, Brian Mahon, Ronan Sweeney, Kevin Healy, Ryan Philips, Ross Farrell, Aaron Walsh, Oisin Geraghty. Subs Used: Jamie Callaghan, Kevin Quigley, Tony Fox, Gary Anderson The replay will be played this Thursday in Coola at 7pm with a place in the final at stake..
