U14s got off to a winning start in championship away to Easkey this week. Next match 14th August. Men’s team are continuing there preparation for first round of Junior championship against St Michael’s. This is fixed for Bunnanadden on 14th August. Congratulations to Fr Brendan McCarrick who celebrated his first mass in Cloonacool on Friday night last. THE first round of the Championship were the main focus of the Men’s section with the Senior and intermediate teams both gracing the hallowed turf of Markievicz Park on Saturday and Sunday. The Senior side faced neighbours Coolera/ Strandhill on Saturday evening and came out of the blocks with a determined grit and soon held a 3 point lead. The Mary’s men kept playing fast flowing football and were too good for the Coolera side and held a 3- 08 to 0- 4 advantage at half time. Coolera will rue the number of wides in the first half and the second half followed a similar pattern to the first with the Mary’s men retuning a total of 4- 15 to Coolera’s 0- 7 at the full time whistle. Next Saturday will be a more challenging proposition when they face Tubbercurry in Markievicz Park with throw in at 7: 30pm.

The Intermediate Championship started in earnest on Sunday afternoon and our lads fought hard to the end but were out of their depth in this competition, next up they face Enniscrone/ Kilglass in Cloonacool Community Park with throw- in at 2: 00pm. Please come out and support both our teams in their Championship campaigns. Our under 14’ s played their quarter final match in the Championship against Shamrock Gaels on Friday night last.

The team performed very well and took some excellent scores to win the match comfortably, the whole panel got an opportunity to play and everyone put in a good effort. Notable performers were Shane Muldowney and Tom Gavin who controlled possession in midfield.

We look forward now to our semi- final match against the winners of the Calry St Joseph’s match and Ballymote/ Bunninadden. We have been drawn away from home for this match which will be played on the 12th August. Our 12A team advanced to the County Final after a comfortable victory over Shamrock Gaels on Tuesday last. In poor condition on a rain sodden pitch the physically stronger home team adapted to the condition best in the 1st quarter and built up a match winning lead.

Shamrock Gaels adapted to the conditions better as the game progressed but St Marys ran out winner by 20 – 4 at the final whistle.

Ryan Gillen, Dylan Street, Adam Connolly, Saeedi Tumuheirwe, Robert O’Kelly- Lynch, Ben O’Brien, Fintan Campbell, John Mackey, Brendan Munnelly, Shea O’Neill, Ronan Niland, Oilean Mulligan was the squad on the night. Our 12B team lost in similar conditions to an excellent Drumcliff Rosses Point team. Again in the conditions the physically stronger Drumcliff team dominated though the St Marys team battled to the very end losing 13- 5 .

On the night, the team was Cathal Shovelin, Fiachra Darcy, Conor Golden, Ashraf Tumuheirwe, Oliver O’Riordan, Stefan Roche, James Golden, Eli Rooney, Alex Dee, Ross Clifford, Mathew Mulholland.

The U8 side are looking forward to their Blitz in the Centre of Excellence out at Scarden on Saturday morning where they hope to showcase the skills picked up from the Saturday Morning Coaching programme.

St Mary’s Ladies made it 4 wins from 4 with a comprehensive defeat of Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point. Our Minor Ladies were in hard luck against St Farnons. Next up for the minors is away to St Michaels on Tuesday 2nd.

The U 14 girls played Shamrock Gaels in the A league final in Tubbercurry on Saturday night. Despite being without some players, St Marys established a strong lead in the first half with great play and well executed scores. Shamrock Gaels rallied in the 2nd half but St Marys remained in control to win on a score line of 10- 6 to 4- 7.

Well done to the girls and to the management team of Colin Ledwith, Orla Keaveny and Sinead Corcoran on winning the A title and they look forward with optimism to the upcoming championship.

The victorious team was: Dervla Keaveny, Amy Hopkins, Roisin Martin, Diana McDonagh, Sorcha Gorman, Eden Rooney, Rachel Cawley, Ellen Bastible, Chloe McGowan, Ciara Gilroy, Helen Monaghan, Kayla Breheny, Casey Cox, Lisa Kelly, Emma Ledwith, Kate Gavin Emma Corcoran, Lauren French, Sarah Gillen, Laoise Treanor and Mia Byrne. A rampant Geevagh ladies senior team brushed aside the challenge of near neighbours St. Michaels in their championship round two fixture on Sunday morning last. This was a “must win” game for Geevagh following last week’s defeat at the hands of St Nathys. Geevagh overcame the loss of the mercurial Stephanie O’ Reilly to advance with ease.

Later that afternoon the intermediate footballers got their championship campaign off to a winning start when they dispatched a spirited Castleconnor team in Markevicz Park.

Despite losing the influential Pat Cawley just before the break, Peter Bolger’s men turned in a solid second half display which leaves them in a good position to advance to the knock out stages.

CALRY/ ST JOSEPH’S

THE Seniors had their first outing in the Belfry Senior Championship on Sunday, unfortunately losing out to a stronger Eastern Harps side in Bunninadden on a scoreline of 0- 17 to 0- 11. Next up is Tourlestrane on Sunday week in Markievicz Park.

There was no winner of this weeks Lotto. Numbers 4, 22, 31, and 32.
