CAPTAINS Day OUR club Captain Niall Walsh hosted his Captains Day on Sunday last. With the weather staying kind it was still a tough task for all golfers with the blue tees back as far as they can go and some tricky pin positions on the greens. Still after all scores were in there were two men Ciaran Cryan and Adrian Mc Goldrick the only men under par with James Davey one back on level par and Brendan Deignan, Kevin McCarthy and Paul McGonigle one further back on one over. Top 14 went out in the early evening with first out Gerard Tailly and Tony Ballintine followed by James Fallon, Martin Burke and Mervyn Keegan. Next out were Ray O’Grady, Eoin Carroll and Tony Wasylocha and then the top six of Paul, Brendan, Kevin and last James, Adrian and Ciaran. The weather got a little wet for the 9 hole playoff but it didn’t dampen the spirits or the standard of the golf with the top six in the mix up to the final hole. With all scores in nothing could separate the top two of Ciaran Cryan and Brendan Deignan with it having to go to a countback of the playoff to settle it and it was Riverstown’s favourite son Brendan Deignan who took the victory. Winning scores were 1st Brendan Deignan 109, 2nd Ciaran Cryan 109, 3rd Tony Wasylocha 110, 4th Adrian Mc Goldrick 111, 5th James Fallon 112.

Winner of the juniors with the score of the day was Darragh Connolly who shot a impressive round of one over par 73, net 67. Visitors prize was won by Adrian walls with 35pts who won on a countback from Declan Sheenan.

Ladies winner was Carmel Conlon. In second was Joan on Dowd and in third was Pauline Byrne.

Beginner juniors competition held on Saturday and there was prizes for putting, chipping and longest drive. With all our 25 new beginner juniors competing in over and under 10s boys and girls there was something for everyone on the day.

Kevin McCarthy won the lowest gross with a score of 79. After all the golf was played everyone joined Captain Niall and his family, Tonya, Aoife, Daniel and Lochlan in the Middleton bar for drinks. After that all had a beautiful meal in the courtyard where Niall thanked all the members, Friends and guests who came out to support and make it such an enjoyable day for him and his family. After the meal there was the presentation of prizes and the night then kicked off when the music started playing and everyone continued to enjoy the night into the early hours. Everyone would like to thank Niall for a wonderful day and night and wish him well for the rest of his Captains year.
