HERITAGE WEEK PLANS

National Heritage Week 2016 will focus on a wide range of local and regional projects and activities. It is designed to focus public attention on aspects of environment, architecture and tourism potential.

Dromahair Heritage Group has been busy during the past 12 months researching a leaflet map entitled the Abbey Loop Walk which will guide individual and family groups of walkers who wish to stroll for an hour or more from the village and out into the nearby countryside and then back to their starting position.

There are several points of interest along the route, including the Abbey Hotel, Villiers castle, the old railway station, the Ardakip hillcrest road that connects with the main route to Sligo, and the rear access road to Creevelea Abbey and the new cemetery. Walkers will be able to follow the loop route on a simplified map and read notes explaining interesting features. Some walkers may prefer to start from the old station and walk back to their parked cars. The reverse side of the leaflet map has been translated into Irish.

On Saturday, August 27, a special Loop Walk will be held, beginning at the clubhouse at 2.45 p. m. Some artefacts from the SLNCR railway line will be on display at the clubhouse. Seamus Dunbar of the Leitrim Sculpture Centre in Manorhamilton will talk about a series of special ‘ milestones’ he was commissioned to make which will be installed at certain spots along the route.

Weather permitting, a gala indoor and outdoor afternoon is promised. Walkers who turn up for the day will be given free copies of the Loop Walk leaflet. More details will be available closer to August 27.
