TEACH LAIGHNE
Concern has been expressed locally by the temporary closure of the library in Teach Laighne over the month, mid- July to mid- August. A reading programme has been promoted by the Library services for young children, but when parents and children arrive at the Library, it is found the Library is closed. So much for promoting a reading programme.

SPANISH SCHOOL THANKS
Thirteen years ago a small group of Spanish students arrived to Tubbercurry with the help of some locals who thought that having a Spanish summer school in the town would be a nice experience for everyone. Well, now this is a fact and Tubbercurry welcomes every summer a group of Spanish students who come here to learn English.
Now we have got to the end of the thirteen summer and everything has been much better than it had ever been expected. A lot of work has been done to get to this point by the leaders in charge of the students and the teachers, but nothing would have been possible without the help of the people from the town. Host families have become a second family to the students, that’s why we would like to thank them for their help and support. We’d also like to thank the Irish coordinators who believed in this project from the very beginning, the South Sligo Summer School in which the students learnt Irish music and they really enjoyed it, and of course the whole town for the hospitality that has been given to all of us which made us feel like at home. We will never forget it.
This year, like the previous one, we made a barbecue in which host families, teachers, coordinators and everyone who wanted to attend had a great time. A fundraising took place and all the money was donated to Sligo Cancer Support Centre based in Tubbercurry.
Now we have started to work for next year’s course with more illusion than ever. Thank you and see you next summer.

ROAD WORKS
Works have been on- going on the Ballina Road/ Charlestown Road junction in Tubbercurry over the last two months. While the Contractors did their best to minimise traffic disruption, one can only say that the situation was, to say the least ‘ challenging’ for both local and through traffic. Some days through traffic was delayed 10 minutes or more, but the workmen and contractors were always courteous. As the work now draws to a conclusion, people are impressed by the landscaping and the new stone walls built.
The real test of the project is when the new traffic lights become operational. The main right of way will NOW be given to through traffic – that is traffic travelling North – South on the back road/ circular road, while vehicles coming in the Ballina road towards town or travelling towards Charlestown from Teeling street will be faced with stopping at Red Lights. How long those delays are will be the litmus test of the project.
Many locals felt that roundabouts should have been installed rather than traffic lights, but the ‘ experts’ in the National Roads Authority made the final decision in favour of lights. Time will tell.
