Walk extension plan for town track

-

Ballymote’s Town Park Walk is set for a major extension.

Work has already started on the extension of the popular walk, and when work is completed it will mean the route will be extended as far as the Keenaghan Road.

The outdoor track is a wonderful amenity for the local community, and takes in a number of notable local sites including Ballymote Castle and the Brother Walfraid memorial, and ends at the memorial to those killed in the American Civil War.

Much of the development of the walkway has been undertaken by local community groups over the years, and according to local councillor Dara Mulvey is a very popular area with locals.

“It is always very busy when we get the weather,” Cllr Mulvey said.

“The walk is a great amenity for the community and is widely used by residents.

“It goes from the Gurteen Road, and with the new work it will goes across to Keenaghan.”

The Ballymote Development group have been behind the walkway and Jim Cawley Snr along with others has been to the fore in maintaining and extending the walk.

The first stage of filling the new area has been completed using soil from the new health centre site, and it will be left in its current state until it settles before final works begin.

The walkway is a popular local amenity and also attracts tourists due to the location of the castle.
