Old Fair Day website is hacked by a group claiming to be Turkish activists
The homepage of the Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival website was notably different last week, as they suffered a hack from a group claiming to be Turkish activists.
The hacking group, going under the name TurkHackTeam – HABIR, used the perhaps unusual platform of the upcoming Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival’s website to preach their message to the “Turkish Youth”.
The post appears to be a replication of a speech made by the 1st president of Turkey Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
The post began “Turkish Youth! Your first duty is forever to preserve and to defend the Turkish Independence and the Turkish Republic. This is the very foundation of your existence and your future.” - before going on to explain the reasons for this call to action; namely, the current ongoing internal turmoil with Turkey.
Following this rallying call, presumably being used to describe the current unfavourable state of Turkey, the message ends: “Youth of turkey’s future, Even in such circumstances it is your duty to save the Turkish Independence and Republic. You will find the strength you need in your noble blood.”
The statement then signs off “Gazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk”, after which the only evidence of a hack are nonsensical exclamations of “HACK” throughout a press release about the Old Fair Day and a link to the groups website. While the reasons for choosing the Old Fair Day website ( http:// www. oldfairday. ie) to announce the message are still unclear, the PRO for the Old Fair Day Marie Brouder believes that the hack was the result of “Too many people having access to the website.”
And that it comes down to “people not changing their password”.
The attack is apparently another incident in what has been a string of hacks from the group, and similar groups.
The hack itself wasn’t too damaging, as the administrators of the website were not locked out and were able to make amends to the websites content and delete the post.
