Former creche to become a place of worship
A former creche located in a shopping mall in Cartron is to be turned into an evangelical church.
Planning permission has been granted by Sligo County Council to convert unit 9 at Cartron Village into a place of worship for The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Sligo.
The church has been in existence in Sligo for about seven years and previously was located in the upper room of the Methodist church building at Wine Street for over three years.
The church was also using the Clarion Hotel for worship for awhile.
The application for change of use of the unit was made by the Church’s minister in charge, Funke Egberongbe who explained in previous correspondence to the Council how they had 50 members and had been looking for a permanent place of worship for some time.
In a letter to the council, the pastor said the church had contributed to the peace of the community by engaging the young people in its congregation from IT Sligo and the other colleges, giving them a platform and opportunity to express themselves in a Godly and respectable way.
She said they were “a local church of all nations.”
They were initially looking for a building in the Finisklin area and had enquired about a vacant premises there before acquiring the unit at Cartron which adjoins the nearby housing estates and overlooks Sligo bay.
The church’s opening hours will be 10am to 2pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday while there will be an evening service on Friday from 7pm to 8pm.
The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Sligo is a registered charity.
The unit at Cartron according to the planning files is owned by McElhinney Property Development Limited, Tom Daly, Bank Building, O’Connell Street, Sligo.
Permission to make internal changes to the unit at Cartron was granted by the owner.
