The Sligo Champion

Manager delighted with team’s attitude

ST. Nathy’s manager John O’Hara said his side were not going to let Geevagh win three senior championships in a row, following Saturday’s victory over their old rivals. Nathy’s had not won the Championship since 2013, whereas Geevagh were hoping to win their third consecutive title. The South Sligo side were five point winners in the end, and their manager praised their ‘ never say die’ attitude. “We’re delighted. It was a brilliant performance from the girls. They worked hard throughout the game. They never gave up, they’ve played that way all year. Never give up, never die attitude. “Geevagh were coming out to try and win the three in a row and we weren’t going to let them do that,” O’Hara said afterwards. O’Hara felt that Elaine O’Reilly’s shot which hit the crossbar was the moment where he knew this was Nathy’s day. “We kept going right to the end. Geevagh went down there and hit the crossbar and we went up and got a goal then. “When I seen it coming off the crossbar I felt it was our day. It probably was the turning point. We got a goal straight after that. Their heads probably dropped a bit and we kicked on from there. It means a lot to the club. It means a lot to the players. They were disappointed last year not getting to the final. We said at the start of the year that was our aim.” St. Nathy’s also won the minor title the weekend previous, and O’Hara says the future is bright for the club. “There’s 13 minors on the panel and the future looks bright for Nathy’s.” Geevagh man- ager David Gaffney conceded that St. Nathy’s were the better side. In fairness on the day St. Nathy’s were the better team. In the last 15 minutes they pulled away. We had a great chance and we hit the crossbar that would have put us a point ahead. I thought if that went in we were back in control again but we have to take it on the chin. If you don’t get the bit of luck, the crossbar incident might have lifted the team. Best of luck to Nathy’s hope they do well in Connacht,” Gaffney added.
