ST MARY’S

WITH the Seniors in prepara- tion mode for the Belfry Senior Championship on Saturday October 2nd our second team faced St Michaels in a division 3 final played out in the Centre of Excellence Scarden. A team was pulled together giving priority to players who had performed with credit throughout the championship. Michaels showed their ambition and desire to progress into Division 2 and early in the first half they notched up a couple of quick scores. St Mary’s struggled to reach the pace of the game and were punished by an ever advancing tide of determined St Michael’s attacks. With a renewed desire and nothing to lose in the second half, the men in red came out fighting. In his debut at senior level Jack McDonagh showed the hunger some lacked and he rewarded himself with a well- taken goal. David Cummings playing in his 34th consecutive year of adult football, reeled back the years and showed his ability as a full forward and grabbed a well taken point after great play. Fight and hunger was shown in the second half as Michaels emptied their bench but unfortunately we lost the game. Off pitch credit should be handed to the interim manager Aiden Murphy and his assistant Simon Buckley for all their efforts keeping the team going throughout the last few months. The City leagues continue on Mondays and Wednesday with the fading light splitting the U9 and U11 teams. The Ladies intermediate team suffered an agonizing second final defeat in a row despite a determined effort in Markievicz Park on Saturday afternoon.
