MORE than 60,000 students from around the country received their Junior Certificate results.

After three years of preparation, 446 boys and 409 girls around Sligo nervously awaited their results in their respective schools throughout the day. Julie Gaine, 15, of the Mercy College Sligo was one of six students to receive 12 A’s last Wednesday the 14th of Sept. Other students to achieve the same outstanding results included those in Meath, Cork, Wicklow and Tipperary.

Julie from Strandhill was happy but in shock: “It was really strange; I wasn’t expecting it at all. I never thought that I would get 12 A’s.”

Proud mum Mhairi Gaine noted that she was ‘ over the moon’. Daughter of Orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Bill Gaine, Julie said she has her eyes set on following in her father’s footsteps to study medicine in two years time. Mercy College

Principal Collete O’Hagan expressed her delight at her schools results where more than 50 students sat the Junior Cert: “There were so many high achievers; we had a handful of students who got 9, 10 and 11 A’s.”

Paul Keogh, Principal at Summerhill College Sligo was also happy with the results where 175 boys picked up their results.

He said that there were high achievers across the board with a good few students who received 8 A’s plus, with one student receiving 9 A’s and 2 B’s.

Mr Keogh added:” So many of our students did exceptionally well in their exams showing that hard work, dedication and commitment pays off in terms of success. The majority of our students who have completed the Junior Cycle are now in Transition Year here in our college.”

Principal of the Ursuline College, Sr. Mairead O’Regan said that there were a number of high achievers and lots of students who had done their best.

She noted that each student had different challenges and that they all achieved the best they could from their challenges. She wished the students well, thanked the teachers for supporting their students and made a special thanks to the parents for en- trusting them with their children’s education.

Deputy Principal of the Sligo Grammar School, Mr Jimmy Staunton praised his school for the outcome for their results, where 62 students picked up their results.

He said: “Overall the students did very well. We only do ten subjects here in the Grammar for the Junior Cert, one student got 10 A’s and two students were just off of it.

“For Maths and History the results were exceptional with double the amount of A’s nationally. We had 65 percent of students receiving A’s or B’s in Higher level maths. For History we had outstanding results, with 40 percent of the students receiving A’s.”

For those who wish to have their results reviewed, applications must be sent to the State Examinations Committee ( SEC) by September 30th, at 5pm, accompanied by a service fee of € 32.
