STRAND Celtic powered into joint second on the leader board in The Great Southern Hotel Sligo Super League after a blistering display away to a very young Yeats United side.

Strand were dominant throughout with Gareth Kelly netting twice along with a goal each from Mark Mc Callion Leo Doherty, Ryan Mc Manus and Aaron O Boyle securing a six goal victory for a rampant Strand Celtic.

Glenview Stars were at home to Aughanagh Celtic and they took their first point of the season in this two goal draw.

The Big Man Gino O Boyle and Adam Mc Loughlin both netting a goal as well as Martin Ward missing a penalty for Stars.

Aughanagh responded in style with a two blast from Dermot Beggan to earn a great point in a well contested game.

The clash of the big guns in the Andrew Mullen Sligo Pallets Premier League took place at the bowl in Mullaghmor­e.

Prior to kick off a minute silence was observed as a mark of respect for the late Colm Mc Tiernan a former club chairman of Ballygawle­y Celtic and his son Colm captained the Ballygawle­y side.

This game had it all with Ballygawle­y Celtic emerging winners by the odd goal in nine but it was much more than that.

Kevin Gavigan scored twice for Cliffoney Celtic with Ross McLaughlin and Vinnie Boyd levelling matters for Ballygawle­y Celtic to leave it all square at the break.

The second half was nip and tuck with Cliffoney scoring through James Warnock and Conor Carty and Ballygawle­y replying once with a sizzler from Ryan Walsh.

The North Sligo Kingpins looked on course for victory with twelve minutes remaining but Ballygawle­y Celtic have the winning mentality and Peter Murray netted a superb equaliser.

The clock had reached the end of play when Ballygawle­y Celtic were awarded a free kick when the free was taken referee Phillip Mc Loughlin blew his whistle while in that split second Colm Mc Tiernan rifled the ball into the Cliffoney net.

The home side assumed the effort would be disallowed but the referee let the goal stand a somewhat controvers­ial end to a brilliant game.

Carrick Town bounced back away to Gurteen Celtic with goals from Ray Mulvey, Conor Shanley, Conor Silke and Liam Mc Tiernan ensuring three fantastic points at the expense of Gurteen Celtic who battled all the way. Vinnie Frizzell and Mark Tansey were on target for Celtic.

Coolaney United hit six without reply past visitors Benbulben. Declan Mc Cormack notching a hat trick, with Aidan Coleman, Anthony Walsh and Paul Haran all on the mark for a jubilant Coolaney United.

Arrow Harps, thanks to a four goal haul from Daniel Willis with a goal each from Andy Flynn, Liam Tuohy and Colin Harte, saw off the challenge of Chaffpool United who scored with strikes from Padraig Murtagh, Damien Watters and Keith Davey.

In the second round of the FAI Umbro Junior Cup St John’s FC advance after defeating Lough Harps by four goals to nil.

Hit men were Malachy Spratt with two goals, Brendan Fitzsimons and David Burke.

Ballisodar­e United went down by five goals away to Castlerea Celtic.

Ballisodar­e went a goal up through a third minute goal from Conor Davey following a superb cross from Darragh Healy.

Castlerea came back very strong, and eventually won the game at their ease showing just why they have so many players on the Connacht squad.

Manor Rangers went down by the odd goal in three away to Cloonfad FC Alan Hickey netting for Manor with Shane O Malley and Kieran Kiely scoring for the winners Cloonfad.

Boyle Celtic won well away to Ballaghade­rreen FC.

Danny Brown scoring twice once from the penalty spot Michael Corrigan and Gerard Mc Dermot- troe the hero’s for Boyle. MCR lost to a very good Ball- inasloe Town side by three goals to nil at Sean Fallon Park.
