Ironman Ross completes in impressive time at Worlds

-

SLIGO man Ross McLynn competed in the gruelling Hawaiian Ironman World Championships at the weekend, setting an impressive time.

The arduous race was set in Kona, Hawaii, and saw athletes from across the globe taking part in the testing contest.

Ross, who is a former Sligo Rovers player and Sligo Tri coach, put in a serious training schedule to prepare for the competition in hot temperatures.

The Sligo man completed the 3.86 kilometre swim, 180 kilometre cycle and 26.2 mile run in a superb time of nine hours, 47 minutes and 45 seconds.

He had support from home at the event, which took place close to 6pm Irish time on Saturday.

Teammates in the Sligo Tri club were also cheering him on as he set across the daunting course with lots of messages posted online.

Ross took to social media to thank everyone for their support following the race. He added: “Now that the dust has settled and it’s all a thing of the past I just want to thank everyone and anyone for the messages and for those that painfully sat through a long night watching ever slowing splits go by, it was a massive help knowing ye were at home supporting me. To my family that made the journey over, it made the experience a lot less daunting and having a mini Irish corner in the race gave great comfort and I will forever be grateful. To those family members that couldn’t make it, all my friends and savage training group that made the year and process actually enjoyable, I can only hope to be there when you need. If Colm Casey had never bought me that trusty old tt bike, that devalued transition by a couple of grand, and convinced me to give triathlon another go I definitely would not be sitting here, so here is to Copenhagen next summer and plenty more self torture and laughs along the way.

“Cheers folks. Time to surf.”
