Talks avert threatened walkout at Garda Station
GARDAÍ will continue to work in Sligo Garda Station to allow managment come up with some short term solutions to health and safety issues at the building on Pearse Road.
A threatened walkout of the buiding described as not fit for purpose by an independent consulting engineer was due to take place last Thursday.
The report pointed out that the only solution was the building of a new station on a green field site but that in the short term the moving out of the Assistant Commissioner’s office to elsewhere in the town would create much badly needed extra space.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald announced last year that Sligo, a regional headquarters, would get a new station but a site has not been identified and no designs have been drawn up casting the project in doubt.
In a statement the Garda Representative Association said: “We have deferred the vacating of Sligo Garda Station until December 9th to allow Garda management a reasonable period to honour the commitments which they have given to the GRA.
Talks are expected to be ongoing between An Garda Siochana management and representative bodies.
A spokesperson at the Garda Press Office said: “An Garda Siochana appreciates the con- cerns raised by members and is seeking ways to resolve these concerns.
“We want to assure the people of Sligo that the service we provide to them will not be impacted by this.”
