A 30 year old man who went into a pub and poured a carton of milk over a customer’s head had his case adjourned at Sligo District Court.

Keith McDermott is charged with assault and engaging in threatenin­g, abusive or insulting behaviour at Foley’s, Castle Street on December 21st.

Inspector Denis Joyce said the defendant had gone into the pub at 10.20pm and proceeded to empty a carton of milk over a patron and then engaged in verbal abuse before leaving.

The defendant had seven previous conviction­s.

Ms Laura Spellman, solicitor ( defending) said it was the recommenda­tion of the probation service that the matter be adjourned for three months to allow for a more detailed assessment.

Ms Spellman pleaded there had been a history between the parties. The defendant had a young family.

The case was adjourned to Movember 17th when the defendant had other matters before the court and also to allow the victim to attend.

Casey had been “dry” for almost 12 months and it did appear as though he was putting his life back in order, said Mr Mullaney, adding that he had paid € 240 to the victim.

Asked by Judge Kilrane why did he make a mess by smashing the bottle of Bailey’s, Mr Mullaney replied that the defendant had little recollecti­on of what he did.

“Maybe it wasn’t potent enough or wasn’t to his liking” - Judge Kilrane.

Mr Mullaney said the defendant may have let the bottle fall on the tile floor due to his condition.

Judge Kilrane said he wanted the defendant to write to his victim and include the € 240.

The Judge said that, in effect, the defendant had broke into a neighbour’s house looking for alcohol and he didn’t know whether or not it was occupied at the time.

It was quite an appalling act to commit on a neighbour, said the Judge.

The case was adjounred to April 6th next.
