Singing is good for the soul, so say all those involved!

-

HEIDI Stemp who is a member of the Sligo Volunteers Centre Choir explained why she joined for the second year: “The sense of camaraderie and you get to meet so many different types of people. For me I would be shy an introvert. In a Choir you’re in a big group you come out of yourself.

“I can’t sing but people don’t understand it’s not so much about singing as it is harmonising. When you put the group together you get something extraordinary. You get more of it then you put in, on a sold out night there is nothing like the buzz of the crowd to give you confidence.”

Ann Gorby, Deputy Principal at the Mercy College Sligo and co- ordinator of the Mercy College Staff Choir group said: “It has a fun element and everybody getting involved. We haven’t done anything like this before it’s the first time. Quite a few people were hesitant taking part but it’s a great experience I was at the night last year and it was so beautiful.”

Ronan Mulvihill co- ordinator for the pensions office choir group was more than happy to par- take in this year’s activities: “We had seen it last year and it had sold out and some of us wanted to get involved this year. We had done a choir at Christmas so we had some experience.”

IT Sligo has agreed to be a key sponsor of the Sligo Sings 2016 programme.

The IT Sligo and Hawk’s Well Theatre were shortlisted in the Best Use of Creativity in the Community in the Allianz Business to Arts Award.

“We liked the sound of Sligo Sings from the off as we have a vibrant social club and do look for new projects to get involved in.

“We found it brought various people together that wouldn’t normally meet as the campus is so big,” says Austin O’Callaghan, communication manager, IT Sligo, who was master of ceremonies on the performance night in 2015.

“A lot of the 50 students, staff and retired staff from IT Sligo who signed up had never been in a choir before.

“The project really captured the imagination of staff and students. The IT Sligo choir was voted Society of the Year on campus and regularly performs for charity and within the college since.”
