Sally Gardens remain unbeaten in astro league

THE Sally Gardens continued their unbeaten start in the Sligo Rovers Astro League last week as they claimed a narrow but deserved 1- 0 victory over Cash Savers Calcio, formerly know as Dunne Deals Utd.

The Sally Gardens dominated the game and deservedly took the lead on 15 minutes courtesy of Damian Mahon, his first goal of the season. Cash Savers calico lived a charmed life on many occasions as the Sally Gardens failed to build on their slender lead. On another night, they would have rued their missed chances, however the Sallys collected all three points. Cash Savers best chance of the night came from Bart Folan, whose long range effort was tipped over the bar by Sallys’ goalkeeper. As a result, the Sally Gardens went top of the league, registerin­g a very credible seven points from their opening three games.

Wednesday night provided a double header of fixtures, with EJS matching the Sally Gardens on seven points from three games after thumping Forrest Celtic 5- 0. A brace from the prolific Ronan Cox and Glen Shannon and a goal from Barry Sheerin ensured EJs collected all threepoint­s at relative ease.

The other fixture on Wednesday last involved GSS and The Belfry. This was a much more closely contested tie and it was GSS who edged the game and ran out 2- 1 winners. Mick Kelly and Conor Jordon got on the score sheet for the men in blue to give them a two goal cushion.

The Belfry pulled a goal back 10 minutes from time through a wonderful header from Jim Sheridan, however GSS deservedly hung on to collect all three points. The Belfry are still looking for their first win of the season.

Friday last provided the final two fixtures of the week, where Ballyshann­on took on Sheffield Thursday and Retro Rovers faced Strand Celtic.

Seamus Kane scored all four goals in a 4- 0 victory for his Ballyshann­on side, which makes him the league’s top goal scorer at present. Strand Celtic also continued their fantastic start to the season as they defeated Retro Rovers on a score line of 4- 0 also. Senan Sheean got a hat trick while Fiachra Cogan got the other goal for this youthful Strand side. The result ensured that Strand Celtic are now unbeaten this season which is a vast improvemen­t on last year and they will be keen to keep the momentum going.
