SOUTH SLIGO AWARDS

Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce and Community Association is promoting the South Sligo People and Business of the Year Awards with a function taking place in Cawleys Hotel on Saturday, October 29.

There will be three categories ( 1) Person of the Year, ( 2) Group/ Club of the Year, ( 3) Business of the Year. Nomination forms will be placed in businesses around South Sligo and the Sligo Champion will help promote it also.

This is an ideal opportunity to help acknowledge the contributions individuals, clubs, societies, organisations and businesses have made to the economic and social life of South Sligo. If you feel you know, or are part of one of these individuals or entities, please discuss with others and get a nomination form completed. On part of the nomination form you will be asked to do a brief synopsis of why your nominee should be acknowledged.

Judging of nominations will be carried out by an outside and Independent panel of judges, and the awards will be announced and presented at the function on October 29. The function takes the format of a reception with a four course meal, and music and dancing after the formalities. Other novelties will also take place. Please start thinking about the Awards and feel free to nominate as often as you like. Pencil the date into your diary.

MAURA AUSTIN R. I. P.

The recent death occurred at Mowlam Nursing Home, Sligo of Maura Austin ( née McCann). Maura was a proud native of Tubbercurry who always kept in touch with friends and relations in the Tubbercurry and South Sligo locality.

Daughter of the late Michael and May McCann, who were prominent business people in Tubbercurry throughout the 1940s and ‘ 50’ s, the McCann’s ran a shop and bakery for many years on Teeling Street, Tubbercurry in the premises now occupied by McCarricks. Maura received an excellent education in the Marist Convent, Tubbercurry during the 1950s and moved to England as a young adult for work purposes, as did her siblings, Terry, Michael and Margaret.

Throughout her years in England she maintained a strong connection with the Marist Convent in Tubbercurry, and was delighted to be able to continue the McCann tradition of a Marist education when her daughter Michelle attended the Marist run school in Fulham, London.

After her retirement, Maura moved to Sligo and got fully involved in community life there, sharing her creative passion for all things art and crafts through teaching floristry and various craft classes at both Sligo VEC and to community groups in Carraroe, Sligo. She was also an active member of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association.

Her remains reposed at the Morahan Funeral Home and burial took place in Rhue graveyard alongside her parents. The number of old friends and Marist Convent connections who called to the funeral to extend their sympathies would have made Maura very happy, as it did her family and siblings. She is survived by her daughter Michelle, son Mark, brothers Terry and Michael, sister Margaret, and various nieces, nephews and cousins, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.
