SLIGO LIVE FESTIVAL CLUB WELCOMES CHRIS MEEHAN & PALS

- by SORCHA CROWLEY

SLIGO LIVE Festival Club is a unique experience with three performance stages hosting a true festival atmosphere. The Three Stage Festival Club features Chris Meehan and his Redneck Friends on Sunday night, 30th October.

Chris Meehan and his Redneck Friends are the ultimate 12 piece honky- tonk big band, who explore alt- country music from Cajun to Western swing and from country blues to rock n’ roll.

Renowned as irresistible dance- floor fillers, they debuted at the 1982 Ballisodare Folk Festival, appearing at numerous festivals throughout the 80s.

John Prine, Mary Black and Mike Scott are among the many artists to have guested with them.

The band vanished for a decade, reforming in 2009 to record “Dancing in the Kitchen”, produced by Grammy winning Nashville producer Jim Rooney.

The Irish Times described the album as “a joyful love letter testifying to a devotion to country and blues from a bunch of rusty old geezers who clearly never lost their grá for the music… This is an Irish album that, with some flourish, nails the essence of Americana.”

The line- up reads like Irish Country rock’s hall of fame with Chris Meehan ( piano, vocals), Bobby Kelly ( guitar, vocals), Brian Harris ( electric guitar), Francie Lenehan ( electric guitar), Percy Robinson ( pedal steel guitar), Davie Byrne ( bass), Mick O’Connor ( drums), Eamon Murray ( harmonica, sax), Backing vocals: Ana Leddy, Ide Leddy, Mary Roche and guest vocalist Michele Rafus.

The Festival Club is one of the popular highlights of Sligo Live and we strongly urge festival- goers to purchase tickets in advance to avoid the disappointment of not being admitted on the night.

The Riverside Hotel will host the Sligo Live Festival Club. The Club will again feature three rooms of music: The Main Stage with the headline artists, the Acoustic Stage which gives an intimate flavour of the fes- tival, hosting short sets from a selection of festival artists who have played other Sligo Live festival venues earlier; and the Trad Session Bar where top traditional musicians play together in a wonderful atmosphere.
