Love Leitrim wants support for Deputy’s anti- fracking Bill
LOVE Leitrim is calling on TDs to support legislation to prohibit fracking in Ireland being proposed by Deputy Tony McLoughlin.
The private member’s Bill to ban fracking will be debated in the Dáil on Thursday and would prohibit the exploration and extraction of oil and gas on land and in Ireland’s internal waters.
McLoughlin has previously highlighted how fracking poses a serious risk to public health. In the Bill he also stressed the importance of adhering to commitments toward measures to combat climate change.
The move to ban fracking comes after a successful ‘ Sign the Pledge’ campaign by Love Leitrim during the last general election which saw all elected TDs in Sligo- Leitrim, pledge their support to ban fracking.
The two- hour Dáil debate on 27th October is the second stage of the legislative process.
In a weekend that saw a flotilla of canoeists, Stand Up Paddlers and fishermen take to the water on Lough Mac Nean to support the call to “Back the Bill’ Eddie Mitchell of Love Leitrim said
“This is our time to make history. This is what we’ve been aiming for, a ban on fracking. For much of this long campaign our region has led the way in ensuring that the health of our communities and future generations is centre stage. We are appealing to TDs to work together across parties and back this bill to ban fracking.”
