Am other often children was put off the road for five years after being stopped with no insurance on numerous occasions. Marcella Rooney ( 40) of Stephen McDonagh Place, Sligo, was charged with not having insurance and failure to produce a driver’ s licence on May 4 th 2016. She was charged with similar offences on January 2nd last at Collooney and also on March 24th last at St Joseph’s Terrace. Defending solicitor Ms Laura Spell man said unfortunat­ely her client was of the opinion she was covered. It was her partner’s car and the insurance policy didn’t cover a named driver. She added her client was the mother of ten children, aged between two to20 years old and told Judge Kevin KIlrane she knew she was facing a disqualifi­cation or worse. She asked the judge no to impose a custodial sentence as her client had to bring her children to and from school. Judge Kilrane said: “She is now facing four conviction­s for no insurance. She was driving ina twelve month period and caught four times without insurance,” he pointed out. The defendant told the judge her partner had taken her off the policy after they had split up. She had bought the cars and really thought she was covered. “I’m struggling. I’m constantly on the go and struggling with all the bills.”

Judge Kilrane told her she can forget about driving for awhile. “The question of community service doesn’ t apply due to the children. Hesentence­d her to four months in prison suspended for three years on the no insurance charges, disqualify­ing her for five years on each charge. Everything else he convicted.
