Worst roads in area selected for works

THE county’s worst roads have been put forward for improvemen­t works for 2017 and 2018. Senior Executive Engineer Brian Flynn told the Sligo Municipal Meeting that condition surveys had been carried out by the council’s Engineerin­g department and those that required most attention had been selected.

These included the road from the entrance to Cartron to Scotman’s Walk, a section of the promenade in Rosses Point, the R287 at Carraroe and the L3104 at Bunduff leading to Mullaghmor­e. Further local roads in the Grange area and three sections in Maugherow will also be undergoing works. The L35121 at Scarden which has a drainage issue is also included as are local roads in Glencar, Lower Rosses, Kilmacowen, Streamstow­n, Union, Coolaney and Ballygawle­y.

Moving onto 2018 and the R278 in Calry passed the junction of Shaw’s Avenue will be addressed, while a 700m of road on th R287 stretching from Carraroe to Dromahair will be strengthen­ed. The R279 from Cliffoney to Mullaghmor­e and a section of the Ballintogh­er to Dromahair road are also included. Local roads in near the Gleniff Horseshoe, Colgagh, Holywell, Ballisodar­e village, Coney Lane, Woodville and Mullinabre­ena are also in the improvemen­t plan.

Cllr Thomas Healy said there was a serious issue regarding safety on the Coolaney road where there has been six crashes on the same bend over the last number of years.

“There is an issue there. Work has started two weeks ago but it is on the wrong bend.

“There was another crash there recently where a car overturned. It’s only getting worse,” he added. Cllr Sean MacManus saluted Brian and his team for the works being carried out. Cllr Hubert Keaney thanked the Engineerin­g staff and said over the last number of years good decision making went into the roads selection.
