Both N16 and N59 to get lower speed limits due to road safety

-

THERE are two National roads in the county earmarked for a reduction in speed. Tom Brennan, Senior Engineer, during his detailed presentation on Speed Limits Review, said the council was proposing two locations to drop from 100km/ ph to 80km/ ph. They are the N16 from Sligo as far as the Leitrim border and also the N59 from Ballisodare to Beltra. Cathoirleach Cllr Hubert Keaney said he welcomed the reduction in speed on the N16. He added: “I welcome this move because you can’t drive at 100km/ ph on the N16 unless you’re a rally driver,” he pointed out. The roll- out of 30 km/ ph slow zones in housing estates is also being proposed. Mr Brennan explained the Area Engineer had reviewed the data for slow zones and 186 housing estates county wide were applicable, 117 of which are in the Municipal District. He said it was quite a volume of work to put signs into all the locations and suggested introducing the 30km/ ph into the by- laws and then starting to put up signs. Mr Brennan said the 50km/ ph zone in Ballygawley will be extended, as will the 60km/ ph speed limit at Barnashrahy. Transition zones on the approach to villages will see changes, he added. Cllr Keaney brought to the attention the matter of children in Rathcormac village not having a bus shelter, while Cllr Healy said the 50km/ ph zone in Ballisodare should be extended to Corhawnagh Church. Mr Brennan added the introduction of temporary speed limits at times children are being picked up from schools is something that may be rolled out.
