Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point are Division 2 winners

DRUMCLIFFE/ ROSS. GEEVAGH 1- 15 1- 06 DRUMCLIFFE/ ROSSES Point are the Furey’s Coaches Senior Football League Division 2 champions following a 1- 15 to 1- 06 victory over Geevagh at Markievicz Park on Sunday afternoon.

Paul Logan’s six points, five in the second- half, proved crucial to Drumcliffe’s comfortabl­e victory.

Just two points separated the sides at half- time, but Kevin Dufficy’s side battled on in the second- half, scoring 1- 10 following the re- start.

Kenneth Sweeney got Geevagh up and running after five minutes when he sent his free- kick over.

It was tit- for- tat for much of the first- half, as both sides really struggled to find the target, Drumcliffe Rosses Point took 10 minutes to get their first point on the board, that point coming courtesy of Niall Collery.

Drumcliffe’s five wides in the first- half gave Geevagh a bit of leeway, and they went ahead once again on 11 minutes thanks to Jimmy O’Reilly, before Dominic Kearns extended their lead further to two points.

Drumcliffe went on the rampage and were soon 0- 05 to 0- 03 ahead.

Cian Lally began the purple patch, before two scores from Niall Canning were added to by Paul Logan’s free- kick, which sailed between the posts despite David O’Reilly’s distractio­n attempts.

Neil Ewing missed a wonderful goal chance in first- half stoppage time, before the same man got his body in the way to block David O’Reilly’s ball.

Drumcliffe started the second half well, with Logan’s free- kick earning his side a three point lead.

Geevagh substitute Daniel Smith came agonisingl­y close to getting his side back on level terms with their opponents as he went for goal, but Ronan McCormack was refusing to be beaten, making an excellent save to deny the Geevagh man.

Kenneth Sweeney was next to hit over, but Drumcliffe responded immediatel­y with Logan again hitting over.

Cian Lally, who was busy Saturday playing basketball, displayed his attacking prowess by hitting the back of the net after 39 minutes, before Canning’s point brought the score to 1- 08 to 0- 04.

Lally almost scored his second of the day after 41 minutes, when he got on the end of a Logan pass.

But, Darren Kearns in the Geevagh goals pulled off an excellent save to keep his side in the game.

Geevagh moved to within three points of their opponents on 47 minutes, when Jodie O’Reilly scored the game’s second goal.

But Drumcliffe weren’t done just yet.

Two further points from Jamie Gillen were added to by two from Logan before Geevagh’s task was made much more difficult.

Jimmy O’Reilly was handed his second yellow of the afternoon on 60 minutes, leaving his side reduced to 14.

On went Drumcliffe and Gillen, Logan and Canning were all on target before the end of earn Drumcliffe the trophy.
