Sheffield Thursday storm to top of astro league

-

SHEFFIELD Thursday defeated Retro Rovers on Friday last in the Sligo Rovers Astro league to storm to the top of the league standings. Despite going 1- 0 down early on, they battled back and managed to collect maximum points.

James Hanigan had given Retro Rovers a 1- 0 first half lead; however Sheffield Thursday battled back in the second half with goals from Aidan O’Brien and Alo Bruen. The game could have gone either way in what was a very closely contested encounter. As a result Retro Rovers are still looking for their first points of the season, while Sheffield Thursday have registered a very impressive 10 points from their opening four games.

On Tuesday last, Forrest Celtic continued their upward curve by defeating the Bald Eagles on a score line of 4- 1. Despite going 1- 0 down from an Anthony Hansberry goal, the Forrest men never panicked and went on to hit the eagles for four. Goal scorers on the night for Forrest Celtic were Kenny Appleby, Thomas Duffy, Jack Tymon & Harry Tymon. Forrest Celtic have now won their last two games on the trot, which is a vast improvement on their earlier showings in the league.

Strand Celtic continued their impressive start to the season and maintained their unbeaten run after drawing 1- 1 with Ballyshannon. This was another game which could have gone either way, with both sides having to settle for a share of the spoils. Seamus Kane had giving the Donegal side a 1- 0 lead with a cracking long ranged effort. However this was cancelled out in the second half as Niall Murphy rose highest in the box and glanced a header in the top right hand corner. There were chances for both sides in the last 10 minutes, as the game became very open. However there wasn’t a winner to be found and a draw was perhaps a fair result for both sides.

The Belfry registered their first win of the season after defeating Cash Savers Calcio 3- 1. This was an important 3 points for the Belfry men who will look to keep pace with their rivals at the top of the league. Kevin Egan got a brace while Ian Rossiter got the other goal for his Belfry side. Patrick Gilmartin registered a consolation goal for Cash Savers in the final moments of the game.

Perhaps the game of the week was on Wednesday last, as EJs and GSS played out a frantic 2- 2 draw. The prolific Ronan Cox had given EJs a 1- 0 lead, however this was cancelled out by a wonderful free kick from the ever improving Brendan Lowry. Kiki O Grady restored EJs slender lead in the second half, but once again Brendan Lowry stood up to the mark and rescued a point for his side, yet again from a free kick. This game has been described as one of the games of the season, and certainly made it worthwhile for all the people who made the effort to come out and watch it.
