Yeats youth rider Devins takes final round of Ulster youth league

-

MATTHEW Devins finished his racing season in style last weekend with a fantastic result in the final round of the Ulster Youth League in Omagh, Co. Tyrone.

Straight from the drop of the flag Matthew made his presence felt and it was clear from very early in the race what his intentions were for the day.

Matthew put in a hard dig on the first hill the peloton encountered, immediately putting the other riders under pressure so much so they couldn’t hold his wheel, finally going clear at the end of the first lap of a four lap race as the other riders in the race couldn’t maintain the pursuit and Matthew had a gap of 15seconds going into the 2nd lap.

Unfortunately luck wasn’t on his side whilst the gap was growing on the chasers, mid- way through the 2nd lap Matthew crashed due to the poor conditions and wet roads on one of the corners.

however being the trooper he is and not one to believe in luck, Matthew remounted his bike and pushed on maintaining his 15 second gap on the chasers, whilst he maintained his advantage the peloton could see him now and they were hungry for the catch.

Going into the 3rd lap Matthew had to lengthen the gap on the chasers, which only consisted of one rider at this stage, the rest of the pack happy to fight it out for the bunch sprint at the finish.

On the final lap Matthew had increased his lead to one minute and had ample time to celebrate a fine win and accept the applause of the supporting crowd who were there in big numbers to cheer him on despite the weather conditions on the day.

Matthew’s fine win brings down the curtain on what has been a fantastic first year for Yeats Country Cycling Club, we would like to thank all our sponsors for our 1st year in competition, in particular The Riverside Hotel, Sligo.

Winter training for the 2016/ 2017 season has already begun and already confidence is growing in the club for a bigger better year next season, training continues from Carraroe car- park every Saturday & Sunday morning at 9: 00am.
