WHOPPING € 32K GOING TO HOSPICE FROM SWIM

-

MONTHS of arduous training for the Lough Gill Swim has paid off for the hundreds of participants with a record amount of money going to the Hospice.

The proud organising committee presented a cheque of € 32,450 to Cathryn O’Leary of the Northwest Hospice last Thursday.

The swim, which takes place every August, was set up in memory of Neil McGarry, who sadly died from cancer aged 30.

Shane O’Doherty, one of the organisers, said it was a brilliant achievement of everyone who took part.

He added: “The committee are delighted to have raised € 32,450 for the Northwest Hospice.

“The Lough Gill Swim took place in August and saw 120 swimmers take part in 10km, one mile and relay events. All swimmers were required to raise sponsorship to take part.

“All monies raised by the swimmers are donated directly to the Hospice. Since the swim began in 2011 a stunning € 120,000 has been raised by the swim for the Hospice which helps run this vital community service.

“The organisers would like to thank the people of Sligo and the surrounding areas for their continued generosity in supporting the event and the Hospice. They would also like to thank the swimmers for their hard work in both preparing for and completing the swim as well as their huge fundraising efforts. Huge thanks also go to all those who helped in the running of the swim and provided sponsorship of the running costs, in particular Hazelwood House Distillery,” Shane added.
