OWNERS SELL UP AS CURRIDS GOES UP FOR AUCTION

-

FOR the first time in nearly 40 years, Currids Pub and Off- Licence will change ownership.

Martin and Hilda Currid will pass the business onto new hands as they retire after 38 years at its helm.

Currids Pub, formerly Regans, was purchased by Martin’s father John in July 1978.

He refurbished the bar nine years later and changed the name.

The off- licence shop was added in 1997.

Now, Martin says new owners will benefit from the potential to expand the business, as it not only comes with an off- licence, but accommodation too.

He said: “It’s a very large premises and there is definitely room to expand it.

“For example if they wanted to introduce food they could turn the off- licence into a kitchen. The building also has a flat roof so it’s possible to add another storey for more accommodation.”

Martin added that although there are many pubs in Sligo, there is a market for something different.

“It’s not the most central location but we are lucky to have local customers and lots of regulars.”

The premises is located at the junction of Connolly Street and Burton Street. Martin be- lieves it has lots of potential as a business: “There is room to add so much to the business. It has been family run for the last 40 years so I suppose there is a possibility that another family might be interested in coming in and taking it over.”

The premises features ladies, gents and disabled toilets. The lounge bar measures 880 sqft while the front bar is 297 sqft. The off- licence is 459 sqft and is fully- shelved and equipped. There is also an enclosed rear yard.

An auction of the premises will take place Friday, November 18th at 3pm in The Glasshouse Hotel in Sligo.

While Martin was born in Portstewart, County Derry, his father was a native of Sligo.

Martin met his wife, Hilda, while she was studying at the University of Ulster.

He said the couple have no exciting plans for retirement just yet, but are looking forward to relaxing away after so many decades at the forefront of the pub and drinks trade with the business.
