PRIDE OF PLACE
When Leitrim County Council conducted its recent gala presentation ceremony in the Bee Park Community Centre, Manorhamilton and Newtownmanor recorded a notable wins when they scooped the 2016 National Pride of Place awards in the Manorhamilton Municipal District ( i. e. North Leitrim) Floral Pride competition.
Manorhamilton enjoyed success when it won the Pride of Place Municipal District award for communities with over 600 of a population. Meanwhile for communities with a population of less than 600, Drumkeerin claimed the runner- up position behind Municipal District winners, Newtownmanor.
In this prestigious countywide level competition Killenummery parish’s Ardvarney National School won the Manorhamilton Municipal District’s Primary Schools Floral Pride award for schools with less than 60 pupils while Gaelscoil Cluainín clamed the title for schools with more than 60 pupils.
Drumkeerin’s Lough Allen College won the Municipal District’s post primary ( secondary) schools Floral Pride award. Rossinver took the countywide Floral Pride award for communities with a population of less than 300 people.
21ST ANNIVERSARY
The 21st annual Irish Pilgrimage Trust anniversary social takes place in Great Western Southern Hotel Sligo on this Friday night, November 11, starting at 9.30 p. m.
For many years Glencar woman, Mary Clancy ( née Byrne) has been one of the main organiser of this popular annual promotion, the proceeds from which helps to bring young people with special needs to Lourdes at Easter and on summer holidays in Kilcuan Clarinbridge Co. Galway.
The music for the social will be provided by the well- liked Footsteps band while there will be a raffle on the night and plenty of spot prizes on offer, as well. The admission fee is € 10.
Everyone is invited to come along and support this worthy event.
DE CUÉLLAR LECTURE
Following the failure of the Spanish Armada to conquer Britain in 1588, and its ill- fated homeward journey around the north and west coasts of Ireland, this naval expedition impacted significantly on North Sligo and North Leitrim peoples lives.
Three of the Armada’s vessels ran aground off the coast of North Sligo at Streedagh. One of these vessels commanders, Captain Francisco de Cuéllar afterwards wrote a dramatic account of his and his sailors survival in Sligo and North Leitrim.
On Friday night, November 18, at 8 p. m., a Manorhamilton and District Historical Society public lecture in Manorhamilton Library on Captain De Cuéllar and the Spanish Armada by Francis Kelly Amorset, will examine the local influence of these events 428 years ago.
CYCLING CLUB
The Leitrim Glens Cycling Club is holding an open night in the Bee Park Community Centre Manorhamilton on Friday, November 18, between 8.30 and 9.30 p. m. for new members who wish to join.
The club will arrange insurance cover with Cycling Ireland for its members. All adult cyclists are welcome to come along to the open night. Cyclists meet at Manorhamilton’s Castle car park at 9.15 a. m. for the Sunday Morning cycle.
Adults interested in Mountain Biking meet at the Castle car park at 7.30 p. m. every Monday; good lights and a helmet are essential.
