MAKING SCIENCE FUN
THE Sligo Science Festival will open with the annual Science Fair at IT Sligo on Sunday 13th November, running until the 20th. This family event provides a wide range of interactive displays and demonstrations that explain science in a fun way. A number of workshops for children will be hosted in both town and county during the week. Activities will include art classes, nature trails, meditation and fun explosions. A lunchtime and evening lecture series will be delivered in a variety of venues. A variety of topics will be presented including forensics, cancer research, bird- ringing, plastics in the marine environment, Irish Science Heroes, obesity, and Irish seaweeds. The week will conclude with a celebration of Science in the community including events such as the Carrowkeel Archaeology Walk. TO SLIGO.... AND BEYOND
IRISH artist Fergus Lyons explores Ireland’s landscape, dreams and myths in his painting of the West of Ireland. Irish mythology and legend have become part of the landscape itself and it is this realm of the imagination that Fergus captures in his paintings. IRELAND’S pre- eminent singer songwriter Damien Dempsey is bringing a very special solo set to the Glens Centre on November 25th at 8.00pm. He has recorded a unique album, “No Force On Earth,” as a celebration and commemoration of the Easter uprising of 1916 that saw the birth of the Irish Republic. In his homeland Damien is held in the highest regard by peers and audiences and as well as a string of number 1 albums he has a haul of Meteor Awards. Damien is already known for his searing live shows with his band after several tours across the UK however the close up intensity of his acoustic performance has, until now, only been a pleasure that Irish audiences have witnessed. This is a one off opportunity to see Damien in an intimate setting sharing his story of this centenary year. IRISH BAROQUE ORCHESTRA
THE legendary Irish Baroque Orchestra returns to Sligo on Sunday the 27th of November in The Model at 3pm with a programme of works by Vivaldi, celebrating the virtuoso violin and culminating with his perennial favourite, “The Four Seasons”. The “Red Priest’s” lesser known works will also be explored. Directed by Peter Whelan from the harpsichord. This event is no to be missed. € 20 / € 10 students ( on the day only)
SLIGO CHORAL FESTIVAL
ALMOST 50 Irish and international choirs are set to bring Sligo to life during the three- day Sligo International Choral Festival, which runs from Friday. The High Hopes Choir will open the festival on Friday, at the Gala Concert in the Knocknarea Arena at IT Sligo from 8pm. On Saturday evening, the Sligo Academy of Music Jazz Orchestra will perform a concert at the Gillooly Hall before the Sligo Champion Grand Prix, Prize Winners competition. Acapella in the City, which takes places throughout Saturday, is a fun way for audiences to engage with choirs who will perform in pubs, restaurants, and shopping centres. Sunday sees choirs perform in local churches too.
