Four points separate top seven in Rovers astro

THE 2016/ 17 Sligo Rovers Astro league is continuing to excite, with just four points separating the top seven sides in the division.

Retro Rovers picked up their first points of the season after drawing 1- 1 with GSS. They looked set for victory until the final moments of the game, when Brendan Lowry scored from a free kick with virtually the last kick of the game. Enda Mc Gowan got on the score sheet for Retro.

On Tuesday last, the Sally Gardens registered an emphatic 3- 0 win over the Bald Eagles. Johnny Kenna, Paul Doherty & Aaron Nicholson were the goal scorers on the night for the Sally Gardens, which sent then up to second in the league.

Wednesday last provided a double header of fixtures, with The Adelaide Casino facing Forrest Celtic followed by Ejs Menswear taking on Ballyshann­on.

Forrest celtic continued their very impressive recent run of form by defeating the Adelaide Casino quite easily by 3- 0. Luke Brennan gave Forrest the lead as early as the fifth minute and the points were wrapped up courtesy of a brace from the ever improving Jack Tymon, his fifth goal of the season.

Perhaps the result of the week went to Donegal, as Ballyshann­on came from two goals down to defeat league leaders EJs by 3- 2. A brace from Ronan Cox had given EJs a commanding lead. Many were expecting the floodgates to open thereafter but this was simply not the case. Before half time came, Ballyshann­on were back on level terms thanks to a goal from Sean Taylor and an own goal from John Hegarty. Cian Dolan was the hero for Ballyshann­on who scored the winner late into the second half, a result that put the Donegal men into fifth, while EJs stayed one point clear at the top.

The final two games on the week took place on Friday last with The Belfry registerin­g a much needed victory over the very impressive Sheffield Thursday. Kevin Egan got the goal for the Belfry, which keeps them very much in touch with the top six. Sheffield Thursday stay third, it what has been a hugely impressive start to the season for them in their first season.

Strand Celtic maintained their unbeaten run in the league by coming from a goal down to see off the challenge of Cash Savers Calcio by 3- 1. Bart Folan had given cash Savers an early 1- 0 lead but the Strand men fought back into the game and showed why they are still unbeaten in the league. Goals from Shane Mc Callion, Fiachra Cogan & Evan barry ensured that Strand moved into sixth position in the league, with a game in hand on all the sides around them.
