The Sligo Champion

Sligo sings celebrates its second year at the Hawk’s Well

-

THE Hawk’s Well has been on a mission to get the whole of Sligo singing and following on from the wonderful success of Sligo Sings in 2015, the initiative has been continued as part of the theatre’s 2016 programme.

This year’s Sligo Sings concert took place last Saturday, November 26th and was enjoyed by a packed auditorium. 2016 saw an increase in the amount of participants that got involved with a whopping nine choirs, representing some of Sligo’s busiest workplaces. Choirs from The Pensions Office, Sligo University Hospital, Abbott Diagnostics, Sligo County Council, Sligo Volunteer Centre, Markievicz House, Mercy College, IT Sligo and the Hawk’s Well Community Choir all took to the stage on Saturday night. Each choir individually performed their chosen songs, culminating in a grand finale, where all choirs came together on stage to perform ‘ Can’t Help falling in Love with You’.

Sligo Sings began in Autumn 2015, when the theatre put out an open call to businesses to get involved. The criteria was simple, each choir required a minimum of fifteen participants and each workplace appointed a choir coordinator to work with the theatre and their choirmasters. No previous choir experience was necessary. There were no auditions as Sligo Sings is not a competition, but a celebration of the joy of singing together.

This year’s choirmasters were Ray Cotter, Dave Flynn, Niamh Crowley, Roisin Egan, Michelle Feeney, Eunjoo Goh, Maureen Howley and Amy O’Hara.

A wonderful job was done by all concerned and the standard of performance was fantastic.
