A Co Sligo Nursing Home is celebrating after claiming success at the Nursing Homes Ireland Care Awards 2016, in association with Homecare Medical Supplies.
The Quality of Life Committee at Sonas Care Centre Ard na Gréine were winners of the Nursing Home Innovations in Dementia Care Award. The Committee had reached the final three of the national award category and were finalists along with nursing homes from Co Dublin and Kilkenny.
Seamus Crawley, Sonas Nursing Homes executive director sent his congratulations to the team. “I wish to wholeheartedly congratulate the Quality of Life Team on their fantastic achievement. Achieving excellence in dementia care is top priority for all of our Nursing Homes. Since the Quality of Life Committee was formed they have striven to enhance the lived experience of those under our care with dementia, undertaking many innovative projects. Since Sonas was founded in 2001, our strength has always been our people, and we continue to be privileged to have staff members like those on the Quality of Life Committee working on our team”.
The team received their award before a crowd of 500 at the prestigious awards ceremony that was hosted by RTE presenter Marty Whelan at Citywest Hotel, Co Dublin, on Wednesday 16th November. Minister of State with Responsibility for Older People Helen McEntee TD presented the award.
27 finalists from counties and communities across Ireland went forward for nine award categories that recognised nurses, carers, catering & nutrition, ancillary workers, social & recreational activities, dementia care, and end of life care. A Nursing Homes Ireland Lifetime Achievement Award and Resident Achievement Award were also presented at the Awards ceremony.
Tadhg Daly, Nursing Homes Ireland CEO extended his congratulations to the Quality of Life Committee. “Congratulations to the Sonas Committee for their magnificent achievement in winning the Innovations in Dementia Care Award. The award was established to celebrate innovative practices in dementia care that are happening in nursing homes across the country. Person- centred dementia care has become the accepted norm for excellence in dementia care internationally. In order to deliver person- centred dementia care, there is a need to create person- centred cultures that are innovative, collaborative, inclusive and participative. Nursing homes are leading the way in developing new models of practice, challenging existing practices and eroding dominant stereotypes in dementia care. This award celebrates such innovative practice focussed on person- centred care.
“The standard of entry for all the award categories was of an exceptional level and to receive this national recognition is a fantastic accomplishment. I’m sure residents and staff of Sonas Care Centre Ard na Gréine are immensely proud of the Committee’s accomplishment and this should extend beyond the nursing home into the wider community and county. The Awards recognise care excellence within nursing homes across the country. The fantastic dedication and commitment of staff within these homes from home are enhancing the lives of people in their care.”
Now in their seventh year, nominations for the Care Awards were invited and submitted by NHI’s 370 Members who are based in communities across Ireland. Nominations were submitted by nursing home residents, visitors to nursing homes, staff, and the general public.
