HONOURING MAUREEN

A lovely evening was had in the Teeling Centre, Collooney on Tuesday night, December 6, to honour Maureen Mullen as she stepped down from the post of treasurer of the Teeling Centre Committee. Maureen held this post for over 30 years and was a key character in acquiring the Teeling Centre building on a 2.2acre site in the late 1970s/ early 1980s for the local community, together with Pat O’Meara RIP.

Master of ceremonies on the night was local representative, Thomas Healy, who introduced different speakers who paid tribute to Maureen and her work over the years. Speakers included Paul Murray; Shane O’Meara, Principal of Scoil Mhuire and Iosef; Conal Cannon, who has taken up the role of Treasurer on the Teeling Centre Committee; Johnny Banks – Teeling Centre; Margaret Bolton, former colleague of Maureen’s in the local post office and longtime friend; Musical entertainment was provided by students from Scoil Mhuire agus Iosef; the gorgeous cake was made by Majella Healy; refreshments were prepared by Denise Mullen.

It is great to think, that as Johnny Banks reminded us all, that from trying to gather £ 68,000 when the country was in a tough recession at the time in the early 80’ s selling £ 100 tickets – some paid for in instalments – that now over the years there are very few people from the area who haven’t had some occasion to be in the Teeling Centre whether through sport; meetings; birthday parties; music lessons etc etc.

As Johnny said, today there are 25 staff in Tír na nÓg, the onsite Creche facility; large numbers attending the ongoing IT training classes as well as many participants throughout the year for sports training; music lessons; art classes and so much more besides. It is a real credit to the work of volunteers like Maureen who initially got the ball rolling and kept the centre going over the years. Congratulations Maureen and every good wish to you and your family in the years ahead.
