Local swimmers shine in Castlebar gala

TWENTY eight Sligo swimmers travelled to the Castlebar B/ C gala recently under the guidance of the coaches Richard Evans and Jade Murphy. The club had 51 individual swims with 43 personal bests, a great result so early in the season.

In the 11 and under boys and girls categories there were 18 swimmers which shows the great depth of the club. In the girls 11 and under Rachael McManus got a bronze medal in the 100m breaststro­ke.

Also swimming well in this event were Jane Bradley, Dearbhla Cunningham, Alma Clarke and Lily O’Grady.

Next up for the girls was the dreaded 200m backstroke but there were more great swims by Zoë Melvin, Hannah Fortune and Mimi Lee.

In the girls 50m butterfly Sioann Walsh, Clodagh Barrett and Ellen Hunter also had excellent swims. First up for the boys was the 100m breaststro­ke with good swims for 9- year- old Mark Bradley, Oliver O’Riordan,

Evan and Jamie Gormley. In the boys 11 and under Max Hunter had a great day taking 2nd place in both the 200m backstroke and 50m butterfly. In the boys 12 to 13 years the trio of Sean Keane, Sean Woods and Eoin Mulkeen all had good swims.

In the boys 14 and over, an outstandin­g performanc­e by Eoghan Kearns, earned him silver in both 100m breaststro­ke and 100m butterfly plus a bronze in 200m backstroke.

Swimming well in the girls 12 to 13 year age group were Alannagh Cunningham, Kerri Mitchell, Wiktoria Jedrol and Eabha Moyes who came 1st in the girls 200m backstroke with an excellent pb.
