COURSE COMBINES TOURISM AND YEATS

-

A new course is aiming to combine computers and W B Yeats in a new tourism initiative.

The Collooney Computer and Research Company is the provider of the Yeats County Tourism Course, in association with the Mayo Sligo Leitrim Education and Training Board ( MSLETB).

The Course, which is to FETAC 4 standard, takes place at the Teeling Centre Collooney and is computer research based.

The object of the course is to provide training for people who are interested ultimately, in working within the local tourist industry. The course seeks to draw on the life and works of William Butler Yeats, his family, and their association with Sligo, as being one of the most important selling points for tourism in Sligo.

Also considered are the landscape, archaeological, historical and other cultural features of the locality, and the industry potential for those. Tutors will provide guidance and instruction as required, and the course will feature work experience in some of the more important cultural institutions in Sligo.

Seán Burke, Area Manager of MSLETB Training Centres - Sligo and Ballina said: “Mayo Sligo and Leitrim ETB through the Training Centre in Sligo, is delighted to be involved in today’s event to recognise the Launch of the Yeats Country Tourism programme being delivered as a Local Training Initiative in the Teeling Centre in Collooney. It is important to us that the delivery of all of our programmes adhere to the standards required to obtain nationally recognised qualifications through the QQI but equally significant to us is the community gain that is achieved through a programme that has such local impact.

“Here in the North West one of our greatest assets is our location and our Culture and Heritage. Programmes that contribute to our capability to communicate the message of our resources will encourage more visitors and generate employment in this area which in turn contributes to the economic wellbeing of the NW for us and for the generations coming behind us.

“We wish every success to the Yeats Country Tourism programme and look forward to working with this group into the future.”
