Carew: ‘ It’s all to play for now’
LONGFORD UP NEXT FOR NIALL CAREW’S MEN AS THEY HIT THE ROAD AGAIN AWAY TO LONGFORD ON SUNDAY
SLIGO are back in Allianz League action this Sunday when they travel to Longford after a week’s break.
Niall Carew’s men are hoping to continue their good run of form, having comeback strongly against Laois in the last game two weekend’s ago which propped them into third position on the table.
Following Tipperary’s emphatic 3- 17 to 18 points victory to Longford at the weekend, this moves them into second place, behind leaders Louth, pushing Sligo into fourth, with Armagh, who also have five points in third place due to a better scoring tally.
With the dog- fight for points in Division 3 as strong as ever, Carew knows the importance of a win in Glennon Brothers Peace Park, Longford on Sunday.
After the weekend, Sligo face Offaly at home on March 26th. while the Yeats men will be travelling to Drogheda for the final clash with Louth on April 2nd.
The battle for promotion is very much on and Carew said it’s vital his side are at their best come Sunday. He added: “We are in a good place going into Sunday and we are where we want to be.
“Saying that, we know that it’s going to be a big ask and it’s very doable for us.
“Look, we think we are going well and we’ll be going down to Longford hoping for a result against Longford.”
The manager said he was watching closely their weekend’s game with Tipperary and said they did show some good passages of play.
“They had some good patches but Tipperary went ten points up early although in saying that, Longford have some really good forwards and that goes without saying.
“They managed to score 18 points so that goes to show they are strong up front,” he added.
“Longford are a good side so we know we will have to perform to get over the line and we have to play fully to our potential.
“They are quite a physical side. We’ve been playing well and even in the defeat to Antrim we had a lot of scoring chances but we just didn’t convert them on the day.
“So we’ll be hopeful that won’t be the case on Sunday.”
There is just one injury doubt ahead of Sunday’s game, with Mark Breheny touch and go with a calf muscle strain.
“We have Gerard O’Kelly- Lynch back following a hamstring injury, Mark is still touch and go at the minute.
“Other than that we have a clean bill of health,” the manager said.
The Laois victory gave the Yeats men an added spring in their step, yet Carew says it’s about getting the right result in Longford.
“We did get a boost following the Laois game but that’s gone now.
“We have to focus fully on Longford, we’re fourth on the table and want to get up to the top two.
“It’s all about the next three games and getting results in all three games. “That’s the plan,” Carew added. Throw- in to Sunday’s match with Longford is 2pm in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.
