PATRICK’S DAY ROAD RACE

Preparations are being finalised at present for the Tubbercurry St Patrick’s Day Road Race which takes place at midday. This year’s event is the 44th running of the event, having first started in 1974. Winner of the first event was Danny McDaid, the ‘ flying Postman’ from Donega, who was an Olympic athlete at that time.

The main event is a 10km race which does a circuit of the town before going through Moylough and Powellsboro and finishes back in town at the Credit Union building. Over the last few years, a 5km event has also taken place, starting at 11.30 a. m., and this run will attract over 100 participants.

Over 300 runners are expected for the 10km event and stewards are asked to volunteer and be in attendance by 11 a. m.

This event is one of the first big road races of the season and is eagerly anticipated by the hundreds of people who have been out training over recent months.

Refreshments as usual are served at Killorans on Teeling Street and an enjoyable few hours are assured, with a festival athmosphere to help celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

The Tubbercurry Road Race has gone from strength to strength in recent years and athletes from all over Ireland travel to test their speed and endurance on the roads around Tubbercurry.

The history of the race is interesting as it was originally supposed to be first held on St Stephen’s Day in 1973. However, heavy snow forced its cancellation and it was put back to St Patrick’s Day in 1974 and has remained a feature of the calendar since then.

Ironically, South Sligo Athletics Club have also started a ST. Stephen’s Day 5km run over the last few years, and this is now proving a big hit also.

The founding fathers and mothers of the race back in 1974 are very proud of how the race has progressed, and a new generation of organisers and committee members have ensured its future for many years to come.
