Helping to keep Sligo beautiful
DESPITE the spell of bad weather more than 50 people turned out for the annual Good Friday clean up ran by Sligo Tidy Towns.
The clean- up is in its 5th year in Sligo and every year the Sligo Tidy towns gather to give Sligo a spring clean with the help of a huge number of volunteers.
More than 100 people volunteered at the 2016 clean up.
John Kielty, Vice- chairman welcomed the crowd, “The town is looking good but it is our duty and our delight to make it look better.”
Peter Tiernan, Chairman of the Sligo Tidy Towns Committee was delighted with Fridays turn out and the pride people have in cleaning their town.
“We ask people to keep their own area tidy and clean as possible as it will help our efforts and pay off when it comes to the Tidy Town competition. We always encourage people to come it and help as much as they can.”
Picking up rubbish is only one of Sligo Tidy Towns’ activities who assist with restoration of buildings, planting flowers and much more.
Sam Carroll is one volunteer who recently re- located from Dublin to Sligo and became interested in volunteering as it was a great way to ‘ get involved and meet people.’
“I was more than happy to come down and lend a helping hand.
“I am involved with one of the local men’s sheds so I heard about the clean up through that” he said.
Also lending a helping hand were the younger volunteers from the Sligo Cubs who were participating as part of their Environmental Badge.
Starting on Sunday 23 April every week the committee will meet with volunteers and spend two hours cleaning the town. For more information on how to get involved see www. sligotidytowns. ie
