Rovers will interview candidates this week for managerial role

SLIGO Rovers will this week conduct interviews for the vacant managerial role as they look to find the right man to replace Dave Robertson.

Having received a huge volume of applications for the role, believed to be dozens, a shortlist has been compiled and three or four candidates will speak with the committee in the coming days regarding the role.

Chairman Martin Heragthy told The Sligo Champion that the timing of the manager’s appointment will depend on interviews, and it could be next week before a final decision is made.

“We have had significant interest in the role. The Easter weekend has been a bit disruptive but we will be conducting interviews this week with three or four candidates so that’s where we’re at right now,” Mr. Heragthy said.

He continued: “The timing of the appointment depends really on how the interviews go. We have short- listed it down to a three or four and it’s difficult to get times that suit everyone with the double fixtures and games on in the UK and that so nailing people down to times that suit them can be hard.”

With a decision as big as this to be made, Mr. Heragthy asserted that it is crucial the required time is taken to make the correct decision, and they will not be rushing into it for the sake of it.

“The priority is to get the right person, rather than rush at it. We want to give this as much attention as possible because it is a huge decision.

“We had huge interest in the job so we had to whittle it down to eight or so and then cut it further for interviews,” he added.

As is the norm, Rovers have been linked with various names from both Ireland and further afield.

Martin Russell has been linked with the job since leaving Limerick, and his appearance at Tallaght Stadium on Friday night certainly set tongues wagging.

Former Republic of Ireland international Keith Andrews has also been heavily linked with the job, as has from Tranmere boss Gary Brabin.

Former Crawley Town manager Mark Yates has also been mentioned.

Tom Saintfiet, most recently manager of Trinidad and Tobago, is also believed to have applied for the job.
