The Sligo Champion

DRUMCLIFFE/ ROSSES POINT

-

WE extend deepest sympathy to our club member Jimmy Smith and the Smith family on the passing of Jimmy’s sister Sheila Smith last week. The Smith family are in our thoughts at this sad time. OUR senior men’s footballers are in the middle of a busy Easter programme, having played two Division 1 league matches in three days over the Easter weekend. First up was the visit of reigning league and county champions Tourlestrane to Oxfield on Good Friday. The south Sligo side won by 1- 14 to 1- 8. Two days later, the team traveled to Hazelwood and picked up their first point of the Division 1 campaign with a dogged 0- 10 to 0- 10 draw against Calry/ St Joseph’s. Next up: we host Shamrock Gaels this Sunday 23rd in Oxfield at 2pm. OUR postponed ladies intermediate footballers Division 2 match against Shamrock Gaels has been refixed for this Friday evening in Riverstown at 7: 30pm. THERE were several club representatives on the Sligo county minor and U14 teams who played Galway last Saturday in a Connacht Championship double- bill at Tuam stadium. While the results didn’t go Sligo’s way, the players will learn a lot from the experience. THE club has entered a junior men’s team in Division 4 this year. If you are interested in ‘ coming out of retirement’ to be part of it, please contact junior team manager Paddy Gormley. THE DRP boys minor footballers play their opening ( re- arranged) Division 3 league match against Castleconnor this Tuesday evening in Oxfield at 7pm. THE boys U14 footballers travel to Kent Park this Friday evening to play St Mary’s in Division 1. OUR girls U14 footballers play their opening league match this Tuesday evening against Shamrock Gaels. We wish new manager Tom O’Boyle and the team the best of luck. Our U16 girls continue their Division 1 league campaign next Tuesday ( 25th) against St Farnan’s at Oxfield. THE girls U12 footballers drew with St Molaise Gaels 11pts each in a very entertaining league match last Friday afternoon in Oxfield. Well done to both teams for a terrific match. OUR boys U12 football teams played Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool in Divisions 1 & 3 of the league last Tuesday. Our Division 1 team battled courageously but were beaten by a strong Tubber side. Well done to the Division 3 team who won their match. OUR U8 and U10 nursery footballers played a very enjoyable fun blitz with St Molaise Gaels at Oxfield last Wednesday evening. Thanks to all the coaches and parents who helped out. Saturday morning coaching continues in Oxfield. U6s at 9: 45am. U8 & U10 at 10: 30am. New players are always welcome. THE club intends to begin to begin U10 hurling coaching for players born in 2007 and 2008 from next month. If you would like your son and daughter to be involved, please contact Aidan O’Reilly on 0879785311. DESPITE missing several regulars, the Benbulben Gaels U14 hurlers opened their league campaign last Friday evening with an emphatic win away to Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool. Our U16 hurlers host Tourlestrane in Oxfield on Monday evening at 7pm, while the following evening the U12 hurlers play Calry/ St Joseph’s in the league at Hazelwood. OUR monthly club meeting for April takes place on Monday 24th in Oxfield at 9pm. SPECIAL thanks to all the local businesses who supported the club’s recent Family Table Quiz: Coyle’s Centra and Sherlock’s Butchers from Cartron, Drumcliffe Tea House, Drumcliffe Family Practice, Five Star Fun, Laura’s Carney & Mullaney’s SuperValu Grange.
