DOWN IN THE DUMPS
ILLEGAL dumping in Sligo ‘ devalues’ our living standards, according to Sligo Tidy Towns.
The Sligo Champion last week received reports of a large amount of household rubbish dumped by the railway bridge in Maugheraboy.
On the weekend that Sligo Tidy Towns carried out their annual Good Friday clean- up, Chairman Peter Tiernan said: “It’s bitterly disappointing to see this type of activity. Sligo is a beautiful place and dumping of this nature devalues all our living standards and environment”.
“We would appeal to people not to illegally dump and to recycle in many of the free facilities.”
Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady said an act like this is disrespectful of locals: “I had not encountered this rubbish until I saw the photos. Someone has clearly dumped illegally and it shows a severe lack of respect for the people and for the area,” she told The Sligo Champion.
“I will be reporting this to the Environmental Pics: Department. There is evidence in places that there has been an increase in dumping but the environmental department react swiftly every time.
“There’s only so much they can do. We all have to be responsible for our own actions. That’s just irresponsible that anyone would go and dump that level of rubbish,” she said.
Councillor Seamus Kilgannon said this level of dumping is extremely disappointing given the amount of work that is done to keep Sligo clean.
“It’s been reported to the council, I hope that they might be able to find the culprits. It’s very bad particularly when such efforts are being made by Sligo Tidy Towns and Sligo County Council to keep the place clean and tidy.
“We’re hearing a bit more these days about dumping. It used to just be in rural areas where people would look for somewhere to dump their rubbish in the hope that no- one would find it.
“But now it’s been done more around the town. Hopefully we can put a stop to this,” he added.
