REFEREE: Michael Duffy SLIGO Gaelic Masters are back in training for a tilt at the 2017 All- Ireland Master title, the inter- county All- Ireland for Gaelic footballers over 40 years of age. Sligo’s participation had lapsed for over a decade with the county returning to the competition last year. Their competitiveness was highlighted by their close defeat to eventual All- Ireland winners, Mayo, in their game in Ballymote.

The Sligo masters are running a Golf Classic in Tubbercurry Golf Club on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th of May to raise funds to cover running expenses for the season. It is being played in a scramble format with teams of four at € 25 per player.

The panel train every Monday in Scarden at 8pm under the guidance of Reggie McNulty, Neil Carew, Gerry Monaghan and Ray Kilcoyne. The Championship starts in July. Presently the Masters Championship involves 15 counties: Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, Leitrim, Longford, London, Westmeath, Offaly, Kildare, Donegal, Tyrone, Antrim, Cavan and Monaghan. Wicklow, Dublin, Cork and Fermanagh are among the sides looking to join next year. New players are welcome, and, with rolling subs, all players should get game time. The camaraderie between the sides is admirable and the ethos of the Masters is very much that the game should be played in the right spirit.

There is also an international dimension; three of the Sligo panel ( David Durkin, Eamonn O’Hara and Con O’Meara) made the Irish Masters team that defeated a touring Australian AFL Masters side in Compromise Rules in 2016. A return series is in the offing, so players joining up could have a trip Down Under to look forward to!
